WWII: We're Celebrating The Wrong Victory

During World War II, over 10 million men lost their lives and another 5 million through the Spanish Flu. It was a dark time for the world as fear of a new weapon of mass destruction could destroy it. Over the course of almost 10 years, the United Kingdom became nothing but a dark shadow as the last stand against the German forces, shook our natural resources and people to the bones.

So… why do we remember this? Every year, we spend a minute in silence, remembering those who gave their lives against overwhelming odds and, ultimately, led us to victory. We have a whole day for only remembrance and none for celebration. I am not coming across as a ‘FORGET THE DUDES, WE WON’ guy, but every year we do seem to sound depressing.

I’m not saying we should celebrate it every day like some Americans do, and we shouldn’t rub it in other countries faces or parade it like there’s not tomorrow, I’m just saying we should not remember just the death and struggle, but the victory and ending. World War II was a dark time for the world, and we don’t need to hear about the dark and deep times, but the fact that we actually got through it.

Of course we should still celebrate those who made it possible, those who died for the ultimate cause and those who survived to see the victory. I might sound a bit to ‘WE WON LADS, YES WE DID IT, AND YES WE DEFEATED THEM. YES, WE WON!” but we should be more ‘happy’ , you don’t celebrate a dark era, you celebrate end of it.

I have relatives and friends, who’s ancestors have died for this cause, and I honestly think, they wouldn’t have wanted to remember it.
