Quantum of Solace - License to Thrill

The game I decided to review today was Quantum of Solace, a game which definately inspired me to spread the word about this game. It was a game that I truly, I could say hand on heart, enjoyed to play. So here I go with my first EVARRRR contribution to The Purple View.

If you have seen the film, the first mission is rather familiar - White's Estate, one of the few people Bond is after in the latest installment. Although I can't really comment, without seeing the film it may be a rather hard story to follow - especially the unseen switch which I will get to later. The objectives are simple - kill enemies, patch cameras, reach certain rooms - everything you'd expect from a basic FPS right? But where QoS takes it to a whole new level is the simpleness of it.

Although that may seem stupid, it is very true. The base that the game is on is very enjoyable but something you'd expect from a video game. With all the new games trying to make theirs stand out and be the next Game of the Year, QoS decides to use a smooth running engine, one of which reminds me of Call of Duty 4 without all the army style attachments and also adding cover. Cover definately adds to the realism of the game and the likeness to the film. It also makes for very intriguing online battles. The system of cover, while very simple, can be used for technical manoueveres which can make or break your online session.

I kinda strayed off there with my LOVE of the engine they used for the game. Anyway, the single player mode was difficult to make perfect as the QoS film contained not as much 'action' as its predecessors, so after the first mission which eases you into the style of the game. Your dropped in the main plotline of QoS, so if you want to get to know the story, either watch the film or the cutscenes (P.S the film is win). As I don't want to spoil the film for you, I'll leave that bit there so you can watch the film before I go and spoil it for you!

The most confusing part of the single player is definately where you have the three mission switch to Casino Royale, this is where for three missions your back in the Casino Royale storyline and are doing the arguebly most exciting parts of that film. If you look closely, you can see the reason why they put it there, but as I skip the cutscenes like any pure gamer, I only noticed because of my love of 007. Then in the final mission it is all brought back to the wonderful conclusion of QoS, which I must say is while rather tame, very exciting!

The only reason I say tame is, throughout the story unless you go up to the higher difficulties, you'll get through with dying maybe once a level - less even. But what gamer doesn't like an easy game! But then again, me being the cocky guy I am I tried it on 007 (Insane, Veteran, Very Hard) I died. A lot. So if you want a challenge then definately start on the higher levels as it is quite tame for what it is. But then again I was to inticed by the constant BOOM BOOM BOOM non-stop action flow of the game. Did I mention there are alot of gas canisters to destroy around the game, yeah, they're fun!

Then it comes to multiplayer...

There are lots of game modes that haven't really featured before in any games, such as Bond vs The Organisation, where Bond is against everyone and in classic Bond style takes everyone on in an attempt to beat the enemy and also the classics such as Team Deathmatch. The online is beautiful, using familiar levels from the single player the game flows fabulously and makes for a great experience. The great thing about the multiplayer of the game, is that there are so many different ways to approach it. Run 'N' Gun still works in some cases, but theres also the Bond style, play it stealthy, silencer on and keeping in cover waiting for that one shot - and as Bond says in the film 'You only need one shot'

In conclusion I really hope you enjoyed reading my review, I kinda hope it convinced or swayed a few of you. I also hope I gave you an insight onto the way the game plays and also a big thanks to Apeel/Bananahs/Purple for letting me on his two man team.

That was my view, until next time, happy gaming!
